Pelvic Organ Prolapse
PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE (POP) refers to one or more of the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum, descending from their normal positions and push into or outside the vaginal canal.
The symptoms of a bulge, accompanying pelvic pressure, discomfort, possible pain or even incontinence can cause a great
emotional distress
alter the body perception, image, sense of self
activity of daily living
sexual activity
socialising and
lead to other complications
impacts one’s quality of life and that of loved ones
can affect financial health.
POP is unfortunately very common and is generally triggered or/and exacerbated by childbirth, ageing, menopause, chronic coughing, obesity. Thankfully there is a rising awareness and work dedicated.
Much of the advice from the conventional and complimentary healthcare professionals is standardised. My approach is slightly different in that it goes to the root of the problem. I discuss both below and share a Success Story case study of a client who regained her structural integrity.
Conventional treatment options:
Limit excessive weight gain to reduce downward pressure on the pelvic organs.
Avoiding lifting or carrying of heavy items
Referral to female/pelvic physiotherapist
Insertion of Pessary
Laser treatment
Surgery
Nutrition can also contribute to the experience of your symptoms and the following may help:
Fiber-rich such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes intake can promote regular bowel movements and prevent constipation, that in turn reduces pressure on the pelvic floor. (Add cumin or fenugreek to cooking these to reduce bloating).
Hydration: drinking sufficient water supports digestive health and helps prevent straining during bowel movements.
Protein: adequate protein intake from lean meats, dairy, beans, and nuts support tissue repair and maintenance of pelvic floor muscles.
Vitamin C and zinc: play a role in collagen synthesis and tissue repair; sources include citrus fruits, berries, nuts, and seeds.
Limit excessive weight gain: Managing body weight through balanced nutrition helps reduce downward pressure on the pelvic organs.
Avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol as these can irritate the bladder and worsen symptoms.
My approach to working with women who experience Pelvic Organ Prolapse:
I take a holistic approach by helping address the:
constitutional tissue laxity
trauma - both physical, emotional and energetic.
work with the organ support responsible for maintaining the upward pull of the body tissue
This is achieved with a synergy of counselling, coaching, use of homeopathic and flower essence remedies, kinesiology and integrated healing, qi gong as appropriate.
Success Story: using homeopathy to help woman who had POP
The client in question was a 27 year old nurse, a mother of 2 children, the youngest was 13 months old when she presented with vaginal prolapse of the anterior wall (cystocele). Before coming to see me she had worked with a pelvic physio, but symptoms continued, this included a bulge and urinary incontinence. She was gutted as she could no longer run or go to the gym that she previously enjoyed and benefited from. She was assigned to lighter duties at work.
After taking her case a remedy called Sepia was the closest match. This is a wonderful remedy for balancing female hormone and which also has the issue of the prolapse. Within 2 months she was back to running and going to the gym without symptoms returning. In this instance no modifications were made to her diet.
Note: Your body can heal, naturally. It just needs a bit of help.
