FOMO

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

This blog was inspired by working with a client for whom a big motivation to do things in life was propelled by the fear of missing out (her words).

Cambridge Dictionary defines FOMO as :’ anxiety or apprehension that one might be missing out on rewarding experiences that others are having, especially as portrayed on social media. This phenomenon can lead to feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, and dissatisfaction.’ My clients extended this interpretation to social engagements (wedding, birthday parties, festivals), courses, getting to eat the food on the table, etc.

This in turn can lead to putting self forward from a place of desperation and not true will, perhaps spending resources (money and energy) that one does not have, compulsive and addictive behaviours, increased fatigue, low mood, low motivation, a burn out at times. Getting stuck in what can become a pattern, giving away power to what i soften sold to us under

Addressing FOMO holistically

Coaching

  1. Creating a safe space to person to share and understand their fears, drives and motivation.

  2. Taking client to the level of sensation to understand the somatic level of their experience.

  3. Assess the level of motivation, timing to see if it’d be appropriate to make any changes around some of her behaviours before offering some coaching options

  4. Help Client prioritise what is truly of value to them and how they could access this from a place of power rather than desperation or scarcity.

  5. Help Client prioritise what is truly of value to them and how they could access this from a place of power rather than desperation or scarcity.

  6. Use embodiment practice to help them appreciate the point of saturation or ‘enoughness’ that would help them recognise timely when in ‘act’.

  7. Help Client prioritise what is truly of value to them and how they could access this from a place of power rather than desperation or scarcity.

  8. Using tapping to help balance.

Homeopathy

In homeopathic ‘language’ - rubrics (collection of symptoms with indicated remedies sharing this symptom) we may consider some of the following when addressing anxieties relating to FOMO:

  • Envy to see others happy: Helleborus is the main remedy here

  • Fear of being forsaken (abandoned): Arsenicum, Bald Egle, Kali-c, Phosphorus, Platina

  • We would only start repertorising (the process of choosing rubrics according to key symptoms/presentation) once we truly understand the case. In this instance there was a strong Desire to dance, rather than attend to business: that has one remedy only Croton tiglium

  • Anxiety anticipating an engagement: Argentum Nitricum leading the way here. Aristolochia clematitis, Cimicufuga, Ruta following closely behind.

With ongoing work and sequence of homeopathic and Bach flower remedies, the client continues to enjoy a super busy and fulfilling life. What has changed significantly however is that she is able to honour her needs and have a night in to rest when so guided by her body. This fills her with a sense of peace the she previously could not enjoy.

If you are reading this dear Client, well done for stepping into your power! I am delighted for you and honoured to see you go from strength to strength! ❤️
