Menopause
Whilst menopause is a natural phase in a woman's life, the hormonal changes and accompanying symptoms often throw us off the even keel. Menopause also asks of us to re-align and for some, for the first time ever, come into one’s own power as we let go off people pleasing, unhelpful relationships and at times with substance such as alcohol or some kind of addiction.
Adopting a natural approach to menopause focuses on supportive lifestyle choices, holistic therapies, and natural remedies to ease this transition and allow for our evolutionary progression.
Peri-menopause and menopause sings and symptoms
Throughout the menopausal transition, some subtle - and some not-so-subtle - changes in your body may take place and you may experience:
Irregular and heavy periods
Hot flashes
Sleep disturbance
Joint aches and pains
Mood changes (irritability, depression, tearfulness, feeling helpless)
Vaginal changes
Reduced lubrication and painful intercourse
Reduced elasticity that can result or exacerbate organ prolapse
Prones to vaginal and bladder infections
Urinary incontinence
Decreasing fertility
Changes in sexual function.
Loss of bone
Changing cholesterol levels
Restless legs
Weight gain
Lowered concentration
Fatigue / lowered energy
Anxiety
Bloating
Word-finding difficulties
ADHD (like) signs
Homeopathy helps balance hormones and above mentioned symptoms. And whilst women come to homeopathy for a solution with these, we also get to address those deeper issues that this transition may invite us to work with, such as:
unresolved trauma
relationship issues
work identity, work life balance
role within the family
grief
mid life identity or spiritual crisis including
life purpose review
reclaiming of oneself
Hormone balancing homeopathic remedies
Homeopathy is a natural and a whole person approach that helps restoring hormonal balance and wellbeing. This means that just one remedy at the time will bring the body’s function back into harmony and also enhance the emotional, mental and energetic wellbeing. Below is an example of several homeopathic treatments that can help regulate your hormones effectively and gently:
1. Pulsatilla
Pulsatilla is a common homeopathic remedy for hormonal imbalances in women, especially during menstruation and menopause. It helps with symptoms like mood swings, irregular periods, and hormonal acne. Pulsatilla works best for those who are emotional, sensitive, and easily influenced by their surroundings. Symptoms change rapidly.
2. Sepia
Sepia works particularly well for women experiencing irregular periods and/or fatigue. Sepia is particularly indicated when one feels overwhelmed, apathetic, and irritable due to hormonal fluctuations. Vaginal prolapse may be part of the picture too and I have had a lovely case where this was resolved with Sepia. The persons needing Sepia feel like they are chained to household chores and enjoy their independence that they find in their career or sports. There may also be strong unloving feelings towards their partner or even child and as such appropriate to work with when relationship dynamics are at play.
3. Lilium tigrinum
Is another remedy where we may see vaginal prolapse with a feeling as if her pelvic organs are pressing out, which can make her feel a need to sit a lot or cross her legs. ADHD like symptoms are also seen: hurriedness, anxiety, heightened emotions — with a tendency to fly into rages and make other people “walk on eggs.” This remedy is known for ‘starts many things, finishes none’. She often has a sensation of tightness in her chest.
3. Lachesis
Lachesis is a potent homeopathic remedy for hormonal imbalances related to menopause, PMS, or thyroid disorders. It benefits individuals who experience intense emotions in particular feelings of jealousy, hot flashes, and mood swings. Symptoms worsen with heat or tight clothing. Lachesis addresses the underlying hormonal disruptions effectively.
4. Natrum Muriaticum
Natrum muriaticum is a key homeopathic remedy for hormonal imbalances caused or exacerbated by grief, stress, or emotional trauma.Person needing this internalises their emotions as a way of self defence (boundary) to avoid getting emotionally hurt (avoidant attachment). This suppression contributes to hormonal disturbances and Natrum muriaticum can help release emotional blockages and restore hormonal wellbeing.
6. Ignatia
Ignatia is indicated for individuals dealing with mood swings, anxiety, and insomnia due to hormonal fluctuations.Ignatia is sometimes referred to as ‘acute’ of Natrum muriaticum as hormonal imbalances are triggered by grief, loss, or emotional upheaval.
5. Calcarea Carbonica
Calcarea Carbonica is a very earthy remedy. The individuals like the stability of routine and dislike change which they may see during the menopause, including children leaving home (empty next syndrome). The individual may be struggling with weight gain, heavy periods (flooding), night sweats and flushing (despite a general chilliness), fatigue, diabetes, thyroid issues and more. It is often prescribed for those who are perfectionist, anxious, and sensitive to cold. In terms of weight management, I would like to differentiate this remedy with Graphites, another ‘transitional’ remedy where women find it hard to shake of the weight they gain during this period.
6. Graphites
In addition to weight gain during or after menopause, the woman needing this remedy is chilly, pale, and sluggish with some trouble concentrating. She may also experience hot flushing and sweats at night. There may be a tendency toward skin problems with oozing cracked eruptions, and be very slow to become alert when waking in the morning. Some of these symptoms may correspond to ADHD presentations, just as it is the case for the following remedy - Sulphur.
7. Sulphur
This remedy is often helpful for hot flashes and flushing when the woman wakes in the early morning hours and has to stick her feet out of or throw the covers off. A person needing Sulphur can be a bit of a philosopher and come across quite even eccentric, inclined toward messy habits, which again we’d consider for someone with ADHD presentation to bring about balance.
8. Sanguinaria
Sangunaria is a wonderful liver remedy. Intense hot flashes, start in the morning and spread upward. The person may suffer with periodic (weekly, or so) headaches or migraines.
